El The Anthropology Department carries out a series of specific investigations within the area of studies pertaining to biological anthropology and paleo-pathology. With the valuable collaboration and co-ordination of several professionals of the Faculty of Biological Sciences and of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the Basque Country, the Department directs its work more specifically towards the anthropological findings obtained in Gipuzkoa, in accordance with the archaeological excavations conducted in this territory.

The preferential line of investigation has been dedicated to determining different aspects of health and pathology in skeletal remains of very different chronologies (prehistoric and medieval). Many of the results obtained have been published in the magazine Munibe and, in addition, many reports have been presented at specialised congresses and meetings.

In this way, the Department has become a leading point of reference in relation with Paleo-pathology investigations. The first investigations were made in 1983, which were really pioneering in the Basque Country (see Etxeberria, F. 1990. Los estudios de Paleopatología en el País Vasco. - Paleo-pathology studies in the Basque Country -. As a "Tribute to J.M. de Barandiarán", Munibe (Antropologia-Arkeologia) 42: 221).

In 1991, with the special collaboration of the Asociación Española de Paleopatología, of the Paleo-pathology Section of the Sociedad Española de la Historia de la Medicina, the Instituto Anatómico Forense de San Sebastián and the Area of Legal Medicine of the Educational Unit of Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the Basque Country, we organised the First National Paleo-pathology Congress in Donostia – San Sebastián, the Minutes of which were published in Munibe Supplement nº 8.

Over the years, the Department has collected a large portion of the literature existing on the subject which is updated in a regular manner (Etxeberria, F. 1999. Bibliografía de las investigaciones sobre paleopatología en España. Up-dated in 1999. 60 pp.). Those parties interested in accessing this information can do so at: E-mail: lherrasti@edunet.es

Furthermore, there is a data base on biological anthropology investigations (TRANCHO, G.J.; ROBLEDO, B. & LOPEZ-BUEIS, I. 1997. Investigaciones antropológicas en España. Base de Datos Bibliográfica. Madrid. (Anthropological investigations in Spain. Bibliographic Data Base. Madrid.). Interested parties can access this information at: E-mail: trancho@eucmax.sim.ecm.es. The authors have updated the data base, set up in 1995, and it now contains 2,600 references. It is a fundamental study in relation with the work we carried out in Anthropology and Paleo-pathology. The data base contains more than 900 authors and more than 200 key words. The available format corresponds to the Dbase III plus or Access programmes, so that it can be used either in the Dos or Windows operating systems.

A debating forum in paleo-pathology through the Internet

This is accomplished through the RedIris Server of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). The address is: paleopat@listerserv.rediris.es.

PALEOPAT came into being as a specialised section of the IBERPAL list (Discussion list of Paleontology), in order to discuss in an inter-disciplinary manner, subjects related to human paleo-pathology (obtainment, handling, conservation and interpretation of human archaeological remains, as well as any other subject of related and special interest).

Non-human paleo-pathology should be preferentially discussed on the IBERPAL list.

Due to the fact that the information available on archaeological deposits is of interest to spoliators, the inclusion of specific data on the exact location of the excavations undergoing development or those excavations which have not yet been developed, should be avoided.

The need to create PALEOPAT first appeared as a result of the report "Recursos de Paleopatología en Internet" (Paleo-pathology Resources on the Internet), published by the current director of the Fourth National Congress of Paleo-pathology, held in San Fernando (Cádiz), from 2-5 October 1997, and it relies on the total support of the Asociación Nacional de Paleopatología. However, PALEOPAT is an independent list totally detached from any organisation, although it encourages all the paleo-pathology research groups to use it as a means or mechanism for exchanging information, both among its members, as well as outside the groups.

PALEOPAT is set up as an open (anyone can subscribe) and private (it is necessary to first subscribe in order to be able to send messages) list, which does not have a moderator. There is no prior filtering of the messages, although it is left to the discretion and responsibility of each subscriber, to decide if his or her message adapts or not to the subject matter and conditions of the list. When in doubt, it is necessary to consult the director of the list.
